I envisioned creating a cloth book using organza, filled with vibrant images that capture the history of corsets, bras, and the advertising that surrounded them. I chose to focus on advertising because it directly reflects how bras were marketed as a form, often with a straightforward, sometimes playful approach. It was fascinating to explore old newspaper designs and see how these products were promoted when they first emerged. The book is essentially a collection of advertisements and images that chronicle the evolution of corsets and bras.
I would have loved to include advertisements from India as well, but unfortunately, I couldn’t find much at the time.
Red felt like the ideal choice for printing on fabric, especially for a topic centered around bras. The advertisements and images have been edited to maintain a red base color, creating a cohesive and striking visual theme. The images are placed on the left side of the page, as the page will be folded, stitched, and sewn together, ensuring the design flows seamlessly throughout the book.
